My daughter's grasp of time and the evolution of human knowledge is still a work in progress.
Here's actual dialogue at our house between my daughter and me:
McKensie: "Daddy, did they have spelling tests when you were in school?"
Me: "Sure, we had spelling tests."
McKensie: "I wasn't sure."
Me: "Of course we did.... why wouldn't I have to take spelling tests when I was in school?"
McKensie: "Well, I just didn't know if there was such a thing as spelling back in those days."
I guess McKensie figured that back in "those days" we simply carved figures of animals and various symbols in the stone walls of caves.... so there was really no need for spelling.
As a matter of fact, I actually advanced through a few rounds of an organized spelling bee in the 7th grade.
I even recall the word I missed.
It was "spigot"... you know, like a faucet.
I spelled it "spikit"... because that's the way I said it....
Still do.
