A TV GUY'S VACATION

BY DAN MILLER

100_2293It was a vacation "first" for me.

We spent seven days and nights on the South Carolina coast, in a place with a wonderful view of the Atlantic.

But that's not the "first" I'm talking about.... we've done that before.

We had, at our disposal, two television sets -- with full cable access.

Yet, during our entire stay, we never once turned on either TV.... we never even picked up a remote!
That's the "first" I'm referring to.
Usually, no matter where I am, I'll at least check out the local newscasts.

And you know what?
It was nice.
I didn't miss watching TV at all.
And my wife and daughter never even mentioned the TV sets.

I kept abreast of what I needed to know through emails to a few friends.... a check of websites.... and the local public radio station when I was in the car.
(That, by the way, marks another "first".... the first time I've ever used the word "abreast" in anything I've written)

Please don't get me wrong.... I'm not encouraging anyone to ever skip watching television news (after all, my bosses could be reading this.... not likely, but there's always a chance).

Still, a little "vacation" is nice.
